“My God, she’s beautiful!” the prayer of thanks popped into his head as he saw her lying on their bed. As he gently kissed her neck, the smell of her perfume sent him back to the night of their first date. He could hardly believe then that she would even go out with him; now she was his wife. His eyes followed along the curves of her young body. He lingered at her breasts, rising and falling with the slow rhythm of her breathing. She didn’t understand why he liked her breasts; she thought they were too small. He thought they were perfect. He kissed her again, lingering as his lips touched hers. She smiled as she woke up. “My husband,” she said, reaching up to embrace him. “My wife,” he returned, as they tested these new titles for each other. “My God, she is beautiful,” he prayed as he awoke early that morning. He gently kissed her neck, as he often did when he wakened before her. His eyes traced her body, changed now that she’d had children. A smile grew across his face as he came to her growing belly. Leaning in close he whispered “I love you,” to his unborn daughter, noticing the stretch marks there. He didn’t understand why they bothered her so much. Badges of honor, he called them, earned bringing new life into their family. He kissed her again, this time on her belly. She smiled at him, reaching down to stroke his hair. He lay his head on her chest as they embraced in the warmth and comfort of their love and commitment...

“My God, she...is...so very beautiful,” the prayer came tenderly as he watched her through the night. The first rays of sun were just beginning to chase the shadows from the room. He softly kissed her neck, as he had done so many times before. Smiling in spite of himself, he looked into her face. The tubes almost disappeared as he thought of the joy and laughter she had brought to so many. She didn’t understand why he called her beautiful, with all her wrinkles. He always told her that they were signs of happiness and joy, refined over the years by the smiles and laughter that came so easily to her. Tomorrow they would have been married for 50 years. He leaned over to kiss her once again. She didn’t stir. He wept quietly in their final embrace as he pressed the call button for the nurse...
